BF Machado graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança in 2004 and completed his PhD degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Porto in 2009 with the thesis entitled “Novel catalytic systems for the selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes”. He then worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the same institution (Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM) before moving to Toulouse (France) in 2011, where he worked at Laboratoire de Chimie de Coordination with Professor Philippe Serp for nearly 6 years on different academic and industrial projects.
Since obtaining his PhD degree, BF Machado authored and co-authored 34 articles in international peer reviewed journals with over 1 600 citations (corresponding to an h-index of 20), authored a book on nanocarbons, published 4 book chapters and attended multiple national and international conferences, where his work was presented. Of these articles, 15 were published in major multidisciplinary scientific journals with an impact factor higher than 6. In addition to the publication of articles, BF Machado is also involved in the peer review process for multiple international journals from the major publishers (RSC Publishing, Elsevier, Springer Verlag, Wiley, ACS, and Taylor & Francis) in the domain of nanomaterials science and heterogeneous catalysis. Since his graduation, BF Machado was involved in the supervision of 2 initiation to research students, 1 Masters student, 2 PhD students and several short duration students from international collaborations. He has participated as team member in research projects in both Portugal and France, and has helped in the organization of science dissemination activities such as conferences and science fairs.
BF Machado is an Associate Researcher (FCT 2015 Investigator Programme) at LSRE-LCM since December of 2016 in the field of nanotechnology and heterogeneous catalysis, where he is developing novel multifunctional doped carbon nanomaterials for advanced catalytic applications.
