Sónia Carabineiro graduated in Applied Chemistry (branch of Biotechnology) at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon, Portugal (FCT-UNL) and obtained her Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering (Catalysis) in 2001 at the same University. Her Ph.D. Thesis dealt with the conversion of NO, N2O, CO2 and adsorption/desorption of SO2 using binary catalysts supported on activated carbon. In 2000 she was an Invited Researcher at Leiden University, The Netherlands, and Post Doctoral Researcher from 2001 to 2003 at the same University. The work carried out dealt with ammonia oxidation and reduction of NO and N2O with H2 or CO. This work included regular visits to the experimental station of SuperESCA beamline at the ELETTRA Synchrotron radiation facility in Trieste, Italy and to MaxLab in Lund University, Sweden to study the above reactions by fast X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. In 2004, she got a Post Doc grant at the Centre of Structural Chemistry of the University of Lisbon (CQE-IST). There, she worked on synthesis of inorganic complexes and oligo/polymerisation of olefins. In 2005, she was one of the 100 young scientists awarded with a grant to participate in the inter-disciplinary 55th Lindau Noble Laureates Meeting, held in Lindau, Germany. In 2007 she joined the Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials (LCM), part of Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM, at the Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), as an Assistant Researcher, with a Ciencia 2007 grant from Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). In 2013 she became a Principal Researcher (with an Investigador FCT grant) at the same lab. Her research work has been dealing mostly with catalysis by gold nanoparticles, mixed metal oxides and nanostructured carbon materials for oxidation reactions. More recently, she has been working in collaboration with the CQE-IST on the heterogenisation of homogenous (soluble) metal complex catalysts. She also has collaborations with other people from Porto and other Universities from Portugal and abroad on other different research topics, including catalytic carbon gasification, biomass energetic valorization, photocatalytic degradation of water pollutants, nitrogen oxides degradation, tissue engineering, biomedical applications, among others. She has also been involved in the organization of scientific and pedagogical activities for science dissemination, projects, supervision of students, examination of Masters and Ph.D. Thesis and teaching in Laboratory (Chemistry) classes. She is also (co-)author more than 20 chapters in books, more than 100 articles in international scientific journals with peer review, more than 150 communications to national and international conferences, and more than 10 invited talks. She won 5 Scientific Recognition Prizes from FEUP. She is the translator of scientific book to Portuguese, co-inventor of 1 patent request with international extension, co-editor of 1 book, guest editor special issues of some journals, and member of the International Advisory Board of the journal ChemCatChem (Wiley). She is a regular referee of several international journals and conferences, being currently the top female reviewer in the world (Publons Clarivate data).
