Elena Gómez Costas graduated in Chemical Sciences at the University of Vigo (Spain) in 2001. She started her research in 2004 when she joined the Advanced Separation Processes Group of the University of Vigo, as a PhD student and her research was focused on the synthesis and experimental determination of physical properties of ionic liquids (ILs), and she enjoyed of a pre-doctoral stay at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 2008 she obtained her Ph.D. Thesis at the University of Vigo, obtaining the Thesis Extraordinary Prize.

After the PhD, she was selected by FCT for a post-doctoral grant at University of Porto, under the supervision of Professor M. Eugénia Macedo (LSRE-LCM) from January 2009 to October 2010. After this, and thanks to an Ángeles Alvariño Program (Xunta de Galicia), she continued her research career at the University of Vigo in the separation of mixtures with ILs. During these years she maintained a close contact with the LSRE-LCM, and stayed several periods at LSRE-LCM. From June 2016 to May 2019, she was a post-doctoral researcher at LSRE-LCM under project AIProcMat@N2020 on the field of partitioning of biomolecules using aqueous two-phase systems with ILs. From June 2019 she has an Assistant Research position of the FCT Stimulus of Scientific Employment Individual Support for developing a project on extraction of vitamins and antioxidants towards health improvement.

She is co-author of 58 articles in international scope journals and four chapters of book, of which there are over 2100 citations in literature. Her H-index, resulting from these publications is 27. Besides, she co-supervised two Doctoral Theses.
