André Torres-Pinto graduated in Chemical Engineering in 2018 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP). In 2019, he received a doctoral scholarship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) to develop his PhD studies at the Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM on the optimisation of 2D carbon-based materials for photocatalytic and electrocatalytic treatment of wastewaters. He received his PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering in December 2023, with the title of European Doctorate. André was awarded with the “Best PhD Thesis on the field of Carbon” by the Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ) and the “Best PhD Thesis on Environmental Applications” by the International School of Advanced Oxidation Processes (IPS-AOP).
André performed a research stay in 2022 at the BIOSUV group from the University of Vigo, under the program Erasmus+, to work on the development of immobilised carbon photoelectrocatalysts for water splitting and water treatment applications. At LSRE-LCM, he has worked with the fabrication of 2D and 3D carbon structures for the photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic removal of organic pollutants and inactivation of microorganisms from polluted waters.
Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at LSRE-LCM working in the framework of project DRopH2O (2022.08738.PTDC) and his research expertise include: (i) the synthesis and optimisation of nanostructured carbon materials for photo- or electro-activation, (ii) the design of 3D photoelectrocatalytic systems with both supported or suspended catalysts, and the (iii) the removal of organic pollutants by adsorptive, catalytic and oxidation integrated technologies.
