Life beyond the Lab... LSRE-LCM Researcher becomes the National Women Chess Champion 2018

September 10, 2018

Ariana Pintor, Postdoctoral Researcher at LSRE-LCM, won the National Women’s Chess Championship 2018, which took place in Braga this September. This is the first time she conquers this title, after placing second for three times in 2006, 2014 and 2017. Ariana had previously been nine-time girls National Chess Champion in several youth categories from 1998 to 2007, and had represented Portugal as a part of the women’s team in four Chess Olympiads from 2004 to 2010.

In parallel with her chess career, Ariana joined LSRE-LCM in 2010 for her Master’s thesis, and completed her PhD in Environmental Engineering in the same lab in 2014, with the thesis entitled “Use of cork byproducts as sorbents for oil and grease removal from industrial wastewaters” under the supervision of Professor Rui Boaventura, Professor Cidália Botelho and Doctor Vítor Vilar. Nowadays, she is part of the team as a Postdoctoral Researcher under the guidance of Professor Cidália Botelho under the topic “Cork granulates: Natural and innovative sorbents for micropollutants removal”, which aims to expand the scope of application of cork granulates for water decontamination.

Staff and team of LSRE-LCM congratulates Ariana Pintor!

Life beyond the lab… LSRE-LCM Researcher becomes Artistic Skating European Champion 2018

September 5, 2018

The LSRE-LCM researcher Pedro Walgode was awarded with a Gold and a Silver Medal for his participation in the 2018 Artistic Skating European Championship, taking place in Azores, in the categories of “Senior Pairs Dance” and “Senior Men's Solo Dance”, respectively. Last year, he had already become “Senior Men's Solo Dance” European Champion for the first time in his career in Roana, Italy, (he has also received a bronze medal for his performance in “Senior Pairs Dance” in this competition) and was third in the World Championship (Nanjing, China). In this way, Pedro Walgode remains in the top of the international Artistic Skating scene in which he started competing in 2012.

In parallel with his outstanding sports career, Pedro Walgode has joined the LSRE-LCM team in 2017, where he conducted the research leading to his Master’s Thesis entitled “Production of green fuel additives assisted by supercritical carbon dioxide” under the supervision of Doctor Rui Faria, Doctor Ana Ribeiro and Professor Alírio Rodrigues. Nowadays, he is still part of the team but his research interests diverted to the conversion of glycerol into high added value compounds through oxidation reactions.

Staff and team of LSRE-LCM congratulates Pedro Walgode!
